Leaders: It is your responsibility to make effort.
As leaders, we all have a responsibility to make an effort with people who are different to ourselves. Imagine walking into a business environment where your first language, skin tone or culture is different - You may be frightened that you will not be accepted and you will probably try incredibly hard to fit in.
As leaders though, we need to be aware of the diversity in our organisations. Instead of relying on employees to do all the work of fitting in, leaders need to take the first step toward embracing a culturally diverse workplace, where everyone is free to be themselves.
Maybe go a step further and learn about the cultures or even the first languages of your employees. Showing intentional inclusivity will always make the other person feel more welcome.
West Ham United forward Michail Antonio, takes this approach with his team mates, saying:
"Some of my closest friends are Angelo Ogbonna, who is Italian, and Pablo Fornals, who is Spanish. His English isn't the best but there's enough for me to understand what he's got to say.
"We can go out and have a meal and be able to speak to each other all the way through it. I'm trying to learn Spanish now because all these players are coming in and I shouldn't expect them to speak English, even though we are in England. I feel like I should try and make an effort to learn how to speak [their language]."
